We are delighted to bring you another delicious coffee courtesy of our friends and trusted partners at Raw Material. In a similar way to how they operate in Rwanda, Raw Material have teamed up with local partners in Burundi who share similar values and principles to themselves in terms of working to benefit the communities that they support.
The Nyagishiru washing station is located in Buhinyuza, a commune of Muyinga province in north-east Burundi, close to Ruvubu National Park, and the border with Tanzania. It is owned and operated by Zuberi Matsitsi, founder of Matraco Coffee.Around 850 families in the surrounding region provide coffee to the washing station. They receive a premium of 18% above the local market rates for their coffee, whilst the washing station staff earn almost 60% above the average labour rate.
The waste coffee pulp produced during processing is distributed to the producers for use as an organic compost, and seedlings are distributed to the farms to increase their yield. Matraco has also contributed towards the building of a school and a health centre for the local community.
The coffee itself is a natural processed red bourbon. It is hand-picked at peak ripeness and delivered to Nyagishiru, where it is floated to separate out unripe and defective cherries, before being laid out to dry on raised beds for 21 days.
In the cup the coffee is clean, rich and complex, with notes of dark-chocolate, morello cherry, and orange wine.
We are proud to source many of our coffees through our amazing importing partner, Raw Material. Raw Material is registered as a Community Interest Company (CIC) in the UK. This means it exists to benefit the community as opposed to private shareholders.
