Our bags are made from Biotrē 1.0. Biotrē 1.0 is composed of multiple, laminated layers. The outer layers consist of cellulose from wood pulp. These materials make up 60% of the material by weight and have been shown to break down into healthy compost in 12 weeks. The interior layer is made of polyethylene treated with an additive that allows it “oxo-degrade” over 5-10 years, as opposed to the estimated 1,000 years needed for normal plastic.

To dispose of the bags, first remove the degassing valve and add it to your plastic recycling. The rest of the bag can then be added to your home composting system, or otherwise added to your regular trash where it will break down in landfill.

We appreciate that this solution still isn't perfect, but we believe it is a step in the right direction. We will continue to review our packaging if more sustainable alternatives become available.
