Origin Story

The Bumbogo washing station is owned and operated by our long-term partners in Rwanda, Muraho Trading Co, and it was the first station to welcome us when we visited back in 2023 - and what a welcome it was! We heard the drums from far away, and only as we got closer did we realise that they playing to welcome us in. As we arrived the station workers broke out into full song and dance, and it was impossible to resist joining in.

The joyful energy didn’t let up for a minute as we toured the station, in fact the intensity ramped up even more when we were invited to jump into the fermentation tanks, and rhythmically stomp the fermenting cherry to remove the fruit flesh from the coffee destined for washed processing.

This natural lot on the other hand was dried in cherry on raised beds for 30 days, during which time it was turned regularly during sunlight hours to ensure even drying, and covered during the night.

It might be romantic to imagine that all of the colour and joy of Bumbogo is somehow transferred to the coffee, but if it could be distilled in the cup, this is exactly how it would taste.
