Bold notes of grapefruit, blood orange, and sweet, lingering florals.
Ben and Kristy Carlson, founders of Long Miles, were seeking to make an impact when they moved to Burundi in 2011.
Some of the most impactful changes started on the ground with Long Miles' team of Coffee Scouts, trained agronomists who work with farmers year-round on everything from cultivation practices to quality control at cherry selection. Farmers are paid higher prices for their cherries, plus annual premiums tied to quality, and every delivery is logged through a farmer card system, so the coffee can be traced back to the individual grower and hill it came from. That means a roaster like us can come back for a coffee from the same hill year after year, and know exactly whose work we're supporting.
They're also equipping the next generation. Many of the farmers' children take part in the Coffee Kids Camp during school holidays, led by their agronomist Epaphras Ndikumana and run with their team of Coffee Scouts. Through hands-on activities, kids learn about coffee farming, protecting crops from antestia bugs, food security, and core agronomy values.
That's a glance at what this Heza Hills coffee represents, and a bit of the story that shaped it. There's no fancy processing or rare variety here, just a classic washed Bourbon grown by a community of exceptionally dedicated producers, which in our eyes makes it all the more impressive.
