Shantawene

This exceptional lot represents the collective efforts of 650 smallholder farms working under Tariku Coffee Farms, situated at elevations of 2,000 to 2,150 metres above sea level. Tariku Coffee partners with Nordic Approach and is represented by Tariku Kare, a private exporter operating across the renowned Sidamo and West Arsi regions.

Beyond coffee quality, Tariku Coffee is deeply invested in social responsibility. The company supports the local community through job creation and welfare initiatives, employing 20 permanent staff and up to 600 seasonal workers, with a strong emphasis on opportunities for women. A portion of earnings is reinvested into charitable causes, including providing school supplies for children from low-income families and offering financial assistance where needed. Tariku also delivers on-farm training to help growers improve quality, encourage specialty coffee production, and access national markets.

The coffee is produced from indigenous Ethiopian heirloom varieties grown in fertile, red-brown, well-drained soils, with bean sizes of screen 14 and above. Tom had the pleasure of visiting Shantawene in January last year and was particularly impressed by the meticulous attention to detail and dedication during the post-harvest processing. Cherries are selectively hand-picked to ensure optimal ripeness and quality whilst careful post-harvest handling preserves clarity and consistency from farm to mill, resulting in a coffee that truly reflects its origin.
